Pets and Hot Weather
Dogs and cats must be protected from the sun and heat even more than their owners. Both cats and dogs can suffer from heat stroke if they are kept in an unventilated home or car. Animals in hot weather are susceptible to sunburn, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, all of which may lead to serious
medical problems.
The following few steps will help you make the summer a safer and healthier time for your pets:

Poems from the Heart

Puppy Mill Strife

I feel for those little souls
who live a life of fright,
as they sit and wait, all alone
every day and through the night.

Then comes a time
when they are paired,
for a chance to breed is never spared.

And once again
new babes are born,
for unsuspecting buyers that just adore.

A final sale-a "quick buck" for a life,
while the rest remain
in all this strife.

We need an answer,
we need an end,
to spare such agony,
to man's "best friend".

Written by Janelle Tulloch,
Humane Society volunteer, 2002

One by One...
One by One, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.

Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.

Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.

When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw through the grey, and the legs bent with age,
and felt I still had life beyond this cage.

You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
and shared your own pillow with my poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.

I may have lived most of my life with another,
but you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.

I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear

Happy Endings...

Snoopy rocks! Click for full sized picture. Hi, I just read with interest your section on Happy Tails. Our story is eventually going to be a happy one, we hope. We adopted Snoopy, one of the Border collie X's that was rescued with his siblings from an undesirable situation. We have Snoopy and have kept his name.
Snoopy now lives on a 200-acre farm which he has the run of, with his pal, Toby, an Australian Shepherd. He still shows the scars of his previous abuse, but we think love will bring him around. He completed his first round of obedience training and did very well. The first class he attended, he sat
on my lap and shook! By the last class, he was an old pro, but still nervous.
When we adopted him, he was painfully thin, and the shelter staff had to shave his fur from his back. He is now a healthy weight and has a beautiful coat.  He still hits us with his paws when he wants attention and would lick your face off, if given the chance. He has a lot of love to give, but he
also has a lot of fears that time will need to heal.
We would never return this badly hurt dog to the humane society, nor would we give him up, he has been through so much in his short life.

Last spring we adopted Sassy. What a lovely kitten we got! She came to our
house and had no fear of our 70lb Dalmation. We thought that was quite
remarkable. Thanks for such a wonderful cat!

Mike the cat hanging out. Hello, I just wanted to tell you a little about Mike, the cat we adopted.
When we left the Humane Society with Mike he was sick, depressed and recently neutered. Mike was about to be euthanized because he had been there for over a month. We took Mike and days later moved to Edmonton, where
he got much sicker. The vet thought he may have FIV or Leukemia, but the tests proved otherwise. It took about six weeks but we nursed Mike back to health, feeding him from a syringe and washing him with a cloth. He is now a very happy little boy who gets along well with his brother and sister. I have sent some pictures. Thanks for everything you have done for him and all of the other unfortunate animals in the Kingston area.
Thank you
Love Heather, Rob,
Kalvin, Isabelle and Mike

Dutchess and Missy enjoying a snooze!Dear Humane Society:
We wanted to say thank you for taking such good care of "Missy" now "Duchess" while she waited for us to come and adopt her.  She has fit into our home very well and has a wonderful, playful and loving temperament. Thought you might enjoy seeing her in her new surroundings.
Thanks again, the Givens Family

Ryan at one year with cirtificate. This is Ryan with his mom and dad. (Right). Recently Ryan turned one and for his Birthday his guests brought money donations for the animals here at the Shelter, instead of gifts to the party. Ryan received a certificate for his donation of $100.00 and is now a honorary Friend of the Animals.

Ron the dog. This is Ron my doggy. Ron is a black lab cross with a mysterious breed. I adopted him on June 26, 2002. He has brought many miracles into my life. (But don't get me wrong, he can be a pain.) He was my first dog. My mom got him for me as a present for making it through 3rd grade. He was 3 months old when we adopted him from KHS, 6 months after my cat Ringo had to be put down because of heart problems. Ron knew I was very sad for the next couple of weeks. He helped me get over it by play growling and tugging on my pant leg, he knew I loved to play wrestle with him. Thank you KHS for this wonderful dog.

To whom it may concern;
I have a sad story to tell you that will have a rewarding end.
On Sunday morning, my mom passed away. She was 68, her name is Alberta Gerow. She loved animals to no end. At one time she had 13 cats! She couldn't stand to see an animal suffer and would take in a cat if she knew it was in need of comfort.
When she came into our house, she would make sure that our two cats got a hug and a kiss. She and dad had one cat in the end. 'Mico' is a kitten from our cat and she loved it so much. That cat is my dad¹s companion and a living piece of my mom's life.
My oldest girl loved her grandmother very much and was a best buddy to Mom. She is devastated and taking this very hard.  Her boyfriend and herself decided that they want to do their 40 hours of volunteer work (needed to graduate from high school) with the Kingston Humane Society! Mom would be so proud.
Also, all donations from her funeral are for the Kingston Humane Society. Donations have come as far as from Orillia. Mom's son-in-law is an OPP K-9 officer up there and all the guys in the dog-handling unit got together.
Also, I wish to now become involved with the KHS as well in my mother's honor. I've always wanted to do this and now I feel, as I must for her and my own well being and for the love of animals!
Today we lay her to rest in Sydenham cemetery, and there will be a cat on her tomb stone! Thank you for your time, and you will be hearing from the Gerow family real soon!

Sincerely,
Andre E. Gerow

We adopted Lori on May 5, 2001. She was shy at first, but now is one of the gang. She does not like it when Aunt Mindy plays with the computer instead of her. She loves to play hockey with Pee-A-Boo at two or three in the morning!  She is a joy to have in our household.
The Herns Family

Danielle, age 10 wanted to help the animals here at the Shelter and doing so, she donated many items such as food, towels and money.  Danielle wrote:
Dear Kingston Humane Society, Hi, my name is Danielle, and I LOVE CATS!  I get so sad when I see a lost or an abandoned cat, so I decided to give money, cat food and old towels for the lost or abandoned animals!
From Danielle
Thank you Danielle. The animals are enjoying your gifts!

We adopted Morris on July 18, 2001. He's a big sucky baby and a lot of love (16lbs).  His favorite pastime is sleeping on Grandma¹s bed. He is a peacemaker among the other cats and we are so thankful that we have him in our household.

Zack and ZoeZack & Zoe: Zack joined us from the Kingston Humane Society. He has grown to be such a big lovable dog. Although his Malamute side can make him a little stubborn, he has become such a large part our life and an excellent playmate for Zoe.
Zack was rescued from an abusive owner at eight weeks of age one year ago.
